V has just turned 2, but his speech skills amaze me. He uses ‘bought’ and ‘gave’ correctly where i would expect a child of his age to use ‘buyed’ and ‘gived’, or something like that. This seems unusual to me. Maybe this is normal, and the deviation i am thinking of is more common with imperfect tense (the one that comes to mind is the annoying ‘boughten’, but i have not heard this sort of thing from V yet either). As a pedant i find this whole language development thing extremely interesting. Something that confounds me, however, is that his words for ‘milk’ and ‘note’ are both ‘note’. He can say many words beginning with the ‘m’ sound, including ‘mill’, but not ‘milk’! More strange is that he could pronounce ‘milk’ 12 months ago. If you ask him to say ‘milk note’, he says ‘note note’.
I was chatting with the neighbour today and it turns out that his motorcycle was vandalized 2 weeks ago, while it sat in the driveway overnight. Then he told me that within the last year it has been stolen, and also one of his cars has been stolen! Here was I thinking we lived in a great little no-crime neighbourhood. Now i am even more paranoid than usual! He is considering adding some cameras to his security repertoire, i am thinking i want to do the same.
