Upgrade Update #1

Thursday, August 26th, 2004

As per usual, the time available for seeing this upgrade through to completion has been somewhat limited. Current status is: Static IP has been obtained, 1000VA UPS has been acquired, and a machine is available. I won’t be able to tend to any more until after the weekend, but we’re almost good to go!

Zeno Upgrade Notice

Friday, August 20th, 2004

So i bit the bullet. Though it feels like maybe i’m just chewing on it right now… Slackware 10 iso is downloading right now, and tomorrow i will hopefully be installing linux on a box i acquired a year ago for this specific purpose! I’ll be calling shaw internet to switch to “SOHO” internet (from “regular” high speed internet), so that i can buy a static IP, and once the new box is up and running i will move zeno over and take the old box offline! The new zeno will be a better home for everyone since it will be the latest and greatest kernel and tools, plus it will be on my premises here in Nanaimo, rather than 4000km away in Orillia (ie, easier to upgrade, add hardware, etc). And who knows; with the amount of traffic currently on IJW’s network, maybe interactive sessions on the new zeno will be quicker! The first batch of packages going in will be: perl (of course!) apache + tomcat (and i guess that means java too), and either mysql or postgresql. I shan’t forget nmap or bitchX this time guys; and flame0ut, i’ll try to get licq in there as well. ;) If there are other packages you’d like installed, let me know.
