Open Source Party.

Tuesday, June 29th, 2004

As most of you know, I was not going to vote in yesterday’s general election. My primary reason has always been that i would feel like i was doing a disservice to others and myself for voting for a party that i didn’t actually believe in (ie, strategic voting to keep out the worst evil). However, something changed around 2pm yesterday. I got talking with someone about how the Green party was really the only “viable” option, if there even was one. So I went online to their very informative website and began reading about their policies. Wow. It seemed as though 99% of their policies are right in line with my own views! (The other 1% were mostly in line). I realized that i finally had an option, like never before, it was actually worth voting. So I hopped on a bus at 5pm to hit the polling station for the first time ever, to show my support for a pro-choice, pro-open-source, anti-pollution government party.

How I Polluted Orkut

Thursday, June 24th, 2004

Orkut might be full of bogus information. I say this because out of the dozens of people i know of [on the system], a couple of percent have profiles which contain false (albeit humourous or silly) information. I can thus only speculate that at least 10% of Orkut’s user base is bogus in some way. One such user is a person I actually invited to join! I wrestle with the idea of “reporting” them as bogus, though, because they are still a friend, and what they do with their profile is their own business. Should I contribute to the trustworthiness of the network by reporting them, or should i let the network devolve into a mishmash of misinformation?

Vegas Monoral

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2004

The monorail in Vegas is not yet open to the public, so i was told, yet it has been in ‘testing’ and was supposed to have been operational since January. All day long, empty trains travel the tracks, stopping at unfinished stations picking up nonexistent passengers.

Paperwork?!

Sunday, June 20th, 2004

Hello from Vegas again. This trip I am back at the Hilton, on site to assist with some software upgrades. My flight on Alaska/Horizon today was marvellous. In Seattle, we boarded the plane only to find out that we could not leave due to ‘paperwork’. After 45 min or so of sitting on a hot plane (A/C wouldn’t work because they could not start the engines?), they told us it would be another half hour or more, so gave us the option of de- planing. Half an hour later they reboarded everyone with the promise that as soon as we were belted in that we’d take off - but that was untrue. We sat for another 30 min or so before actually leaving. On arrival in Vegas, about 2 hours late, there was no gate available, so we had to sit on the tarmac again for about 10 minutes. There were a lot of pissed off people on the plane, but i was pleasantly surprised how most of them remained pleasant with the service staff. It is very hot here, about 93F right now, at 11pm. Gotta love this place ;)

The Two Things

Monday, June 14th, 2004

I was reading an interesting page about The Two Things. IMHO, the two things about the two things is very true. Here’s mine, btw:

The Two things about GUI design:
1. Form follows function.
2. Function should follow form.
